Frugal Family Fun: 11 Ways to Watch Movies for Less

You can buy, borrow, stream, or rent movies nowadays. You can even go to a real theater and watch movies. But if you're not careful, all that movie watching can take an out-sized bite from your budget.

Here, from cheapest to most expensive, are 11 ways to watch movies in the 21st century:

* Borrow from the library. It's free, and you'd be surprised how many titles they have.

* Swap with friends. Another freebie! If you're the organizing type, get together a movie swap at work or playgroup. The more subtle types will just start giving movies away, hoping someone gets the hint and reciprocates.

* Free viewings. Community centers and other groups often show movies for free. Look in the newspaper or on the library bulletin board, for starters.

* Garage sales and thrift shops. Almost every garage sale has a box of movies for sale. If you still have a VHS player, you might find free movies! If you turn around and sell them at your own garage later, score this one as free.

* Amazon Prime streaming. For $79, you can stream from among thousands of movies and TV shows on any whim for a full year. That's $1.52 per week - hard to beat.

* Hulu. Watch TV shows and movies on your computer for free. For a couple of bucks per week, you can expand your selection and watch movies on game consoles and practically every electronic device you carry around. Hulu programming does contain commercials.

* Video rental stores. They still exist - and they're not a bad deal compared to buying movies or going to the theater. Their prices have come down, and some of them let you watch as many movies as you want for a monthly fee.

* Netflix or other DVD-by-mail companies. The attraction of Netflix is that you never pay late fees. However, if you're paying by the month and you have the same DVD on the counter the whole time, it might as well be a late fee.

* Buy it new. For less than $20, you can buy a movie - at the grocery store if you want. It's still not a bad deal compared to the next higher option.

* Cable. Here's where it starts getting pricier. $65 to $75 per month is an average bill, and the deluxe package can be twice that. And the temptation is to "get your money's worth" by watching too much. It's the cruise ship buffet line of video watching.

* Theaters. We hope you shop around, use coupons, and get the matinee pricing. Give yourself extra credit if you fill the kids up so they can't eat another bite before you go to the theater, and you find a Tuesday night $2 special. (Some of our kids never knew you could eat in a theater.) Going out to the movies is still an event. And the less often you indulge in it, the bigger that event will seem

My daughter and I went to the library to grab her a book to read for school...I was browsing the internet when she came running to me and said, "Mom they have coupon and money saving books"...Well I just had to check them out!

I glanced at these books and they had some really great tips on saving money and actually earning income online.  That seemed LEGIT....

I also grabbed some cook books while I was there. I walked out with 6 books.  Leaving the library my daughter looks at me and then put her book in front of her face like she was embarrassed.  I asked her, "whats wrong"  with an ALMOST TEENAGER LOOK ON HER FACE SAID....omg did you have to get the whole library and cook books at that.

Well I guess COOKBOOKS are now embarrassing to almost soon to be teenagers.  GESH...I need help to keep myself updated on what not to embarrass your kids with...On the other hand....maybe I should of gotten MORE BOOKS!  There is always next time!!!

     Growing up money was very tight.  My father worked hard at a local steel company and after 43 years of hard work and dedication he retired ONLY making $8.43 cents an hour. My fathers only went to the 3rd grade and my mom, was a homemaker and took care of the family, she only went to the 6th grade.  Looking back I wondered how in the heck did my father and mom, buy things for holidays and pay for our weddings on such a tight budget.
     I have learned many things about stretching my money,  but one thing I consistently do is SAVE MY CHANGE.....My father had many words of wisdom that I follow today. One is never break a promise, because if a person word is no good then that says alot about their character.  My most favorite thing I learned from my parents was to never spend my CHANGE. I remember many Sundays sitting watching wrestling on television after church, rolling pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. It was kinda of our Sunday family fun day lol....
     I remember a time my father was having severe teeth pain the poor man only had 4 teeth left.  So he went to the dentist and had them removed and decided he wanted to get dentures.  Can you guess how be paid for his dentures?  He paid for them with the change we had been rolling on Sunday after church.
    I have a glass jar that my husband and I place our change in.  I try to save my change from school year to school year.  Then when time comes to buy school supplies I have all my money ready to go.  I just compare prices and shop.. shop...shop....or if the kids are wanting some spending money for vacation we count the coins and divide the money between the kids.  It shows them that every penny counts and add up!

I am a mother of 3 girls ages 19,15 and 10 and yes the gray hair is starting to set in. I currently live in PA, but soon to live in TN. I am so excited about. My HUBBY who I adore so much... tells me that I could keep a conversation with a dead person. After thinking about that.....I dont think that was a compliment....LOL...I honestly think I could entertain myself in a padded room. My oldest daughter oftens says "Mom I wonder what it's like to meet our family" I guess we are kinda the modern version of the Adams family.....I always have a story...so each week I will share a crazy family story....and I would LOVE to hear some of your stories as well....Lets face it we all could use a good laugh every now and then!
